More than 120,000 acres of Sonoran desert make up the Maricopa County Park system, one of the largest regional park systems in the United States. These parks surround the Valley, offering natural attractions, miles of hiking trails and campsites close enough to get away for the weekend, even on a small budget.
Now through Nov. 12, the parks are offering a deal on the campsites: Those who pay the regular fee for one night can stay free the next night at that or a comparable site.
"We're hoping to bring in some new faces to the parks this year, maybe people that are looking to get away for a weekend but don't have the money to go out of town," said Dawna Taylor, a spokeswoman for the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department. All the parks are within a 45-minute drive from downtown Phoenix and each features a different natural setting. Camping fees range from $15 to $20 per night and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. For more, visit maricopa.gov/parks.
