AND
My Thrifty Thursday is VERY late, but it is here none the less. I am also doing my first Frugal Friday (why not combine the two last days of the week? :-) ) Check out Frugal Fridays at Lifeasmom.com
This week I am talking about not having cable TV. Well no TV for that matter, not even local channels.
There are a few reasons I don't have TV and the first and obvious is cost. The cheapest plan in our area is about $50.00 for just basic cable, no box or DVR. The Satellite packages involve a contract, those are not for me.
Another reason is I really don't watch TV. Not saying there are not a few shows out there that I will catch up on when I have time, but it's not worth me paying money when I get to watch my shows for FREE on HULU.com on my computer.
If you haven't checked out http://www.hulu.com/, it may be worth scoping it out to see if your favorite shows are on there. They are connected to all the major networks so if your show is available on there, they will tell you if you can watch it on the network's website. It's simple, free and very limited (short) commercials. They even have some older movies and TV shows on there.
Well there it is, pretty short and simple. Evaluate your TV needs, see if you really need that cable bill, it could save you up to $100 a month!
Got a comment or another tip, add it below :-)

Great post! I recently did something similar- I went from having one of the deluxe packages down to the cheapest our provider offered at $30 a month (basically just the kids' channels). I could live without TV completely but my hubby couldn't :). He is already experiencing severe ESPN and FoxSports withdrawal. But I agree that TV is becoming one of those things for me that just isn't worth the cost anymore. I wish we weren't locked into one of those awful 2 year contracts!
ReplyDeleteGood for you! I am weaning my family off. First we got rid of Digital cable and DVR. Now we are down to basic cable. No extras. It costs us very little each month. We use hulu to watch our shows. And we are also slowly building up our video collection.
ReplyDeleteAnd of course there is always Redbox!
