Tuesday Tip: Saving on Coffee

I'll be honest, I was never really a Starbucks fan. I always thought it was overpriced, until they put a drive thru Starbucks right next to our house. Then it became a convenience. I would go about 4 times a week and didn't think it was that expensive. Until, we were given a $50 gift card at Christmas and it was depleted within 2 weeks. We didn't go more because of the giftcard and yet we spent $50 a week on coffee?! This budget savvy gal is embarrased to admit it!

To make up for this, I invested in a coffee maker. Now I did have a Visa giftcard but I found a really nice programmable one for under $25 at Walmart. A bag of coffee lasts me about 2 weeks. So if I am spending an average of $5 per bag, that is about $.50 a day for coffee.

So let's compare the weekly coffee spending habits:
Starbucks: $2.50 X 4 = $10
At Home: $.50 x 4 = $2

That's a savings of around $40 a month. Crazy right?! Now you may drink more or less (or even a different type of coffee) so you're savings may be different.

If you like a sweeter coffee, look for coupons on sweetener and sugar on websites such as Coupons.com or Facebook. Be sure to look for coffee coupons too! If you like a fresh ground coffee, you can find a spice grinder/coffee grinder for around $15.

Now, could you give up coffee to save money? That is a huge savings if you cut coffee out of your daily habits.
