#Print4Blogher Session 7 ~ Shipping to/from Blogher

I'm Going to Sparkle at BlogHer '11!

Don't forget that The UPS Store is giving away $500 worth of The UPS Store gift cards during BlogHer weekend! Follow the #Print4BlogHer hashtag to participate & answer questions. You can sign up here!

This past week in our #Print4Blogher session with the UPS Store, we went over our final topic: Shipping! We went over how the UPS Store can help with shipping things to and from Blogher11. This year I am driving but last year, I had to fly across the country and my luggage had to be very limited. I ended up shipping some of my sponsor items to the hotel because I couldn't carry it all. It was very convenient!

This year, Blogher attendees can ship their items directly to the Marriott where the UPS Store will receive all packages.

Here are the details of shipping to the Marriott for #Blogher11:

SHIPPING

Bloggers can ship their already-printed materials, luggage, etc. (With luggage, we don’t recommend shipping internationally.) When shipping to BlogHer, allow for 4-5 days for the package to arrive in San Diego. Timing will vary depending on where you’re located, so we recommend contacting your local The UPS Store to determine the expected delivery date. Or you can use UPS’s online cost and timing calculator to determine the expected delivery date: http://www.theupsstore.com/qcc/pages/qcc.aspx.

SHIPPING TO MARRIOTT

If bloggers are staying at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina, all package deliveries to the hotel are managed through The UPS Store. Marriott guests should address all materials as follows:

Attn: {Insert Hotel Guest Name}

San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina

333 W Harbor Dr

San Diego, CA 92101

(Note: Confirmation and/or room number information is not necessary, but may be included if available.)

If bloggers are NOT staying at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina, they can still send their packages to be received and stored up to 4 days until they arrive. When shipping to the San Diego Marriott, be sure to indicate the event name (BlogHer 2011) as well as your phone number so The UPS Store staff can call you when your package arrives.

When you arrive at the hotel, either dial ext. 8940 or visit The UPS Store Business Center located on the lobby level to retrieve packages and/or schedule package delivery.

IMPORTANT: All packages sent to the hotel will incur a handling charge based upon the weight of each item. See pricing here: www.lovinlogistics.com

If you need printing done while there, check out the special pricing from UPS Store for Blogher!

So what do you do with all that swag to ship back home? This is from the Blogher11 newsletter:
On Sunday, with the help of the Marriott UPS store, we will once again have an outbound shipping station. Here is the deal: you decide what doesn't fit in your suitcase after two fabulous days at BlogHer, come down to the outbound shipping station (which will be shared with the Future Friendly Swag Exchange), drop off what you have decided you don't need after all, pack and ship! Remember, you will need to pay your own shipping so don't ship what you don't need!

Outbound Shipping:
  • Sunday - Marriott Marquis and Marina - 1st floor, San Diego Ballroom A: 6 a.m. - 12 noon.

I went to the UPS Store to check out the shipping services, see more in my ThisMoment!

I'm so excited to see my fellow Ambassadors of this campaign at our UPS Store party at Blogher11 this week!

#Print4Blogher Session 6 ~ Business Cards & Proofing

This past week for our #Print4Blogher session with Debba from Girlfriendology and the UPSStore, we went over what to put on our marketing materials as well as proofing them to make sure they are fabulous! Debba hosted this session and went over a wealth of information. Here are a few things she shared with us to include when printing our business cards!

Easy to identify YOU, your brand and your ‘USP’ – Back to that ‘never get a
second chance to make a first impression’ – your cards and materials reflect
you and your company. They instantly create a professional impression – by
being professional or not. You’re there to make the right connections and the
best ‘first impression,’ then make it easy for them to read the card/materials,
understand who you/your blog (brand) is and your “USP.” USP is your unique selling
proposition – or as Wikipedia defines it, “any aspect of an object that differentiates it from similar objects.”

Easy To Read - Make sure the font is clear and that your business card is not overly crowded.

Great Design Stands Out! Make sure you do your best to stand out amongst hundreds (if not thousands) of business cards that will be passed out at Blogher. Get creative!

Here are the necessities of what you should consider putting on your business cards:
  • Name, Business/Blog name/logo, tagline
  • Blog URL, Email
  • Social Media: Twitter handle, Facebook and LinkedIn links, secondary sites
  • Phone number/Address (I actually do not do this, but it is an option)
  • Photo of you, your avatar or brand image/icon
  • QR (Quick Response) Code – A square graphic (seen here), can be scanned to send them to a specific URL. It could lead them to a page on your site with complete contact info, your newsletter sign-up form or just your home page. Makes it easy to scan and open a website without putting in the URL. To create a QR code, the New York Times recommends Kaywa, Qurify and Delivr.

Proofing –

Before you print your items, be sure to have a checklist that looks similar to this:

Read, re-read and re-read again - Look for misspelled words, grammatical errors and items that seem out of place or context.

Read aloud - then Read Backwards! - If it doesn’t sound right out loud, it probably doesn’t sound correct to a contact who doesn’t know who you are or what you meant to say. I actually do this for everything I write (emails, posts etc) so I have no problem talking to myself!

Have someone else read and proof them - Actually, for important elements (like business cards, one-pagers, etc.), its best to have at least ‘two sets of eyes’ review it for typos and questions on how you can improve your materials. This is another great reason to come into the UPS Store, they can be your second set of eyes!

Ordering Materials:

This week the ambassadors took their items to be printed at the UPS Store. The UPS Store can handle Microsoft® Word, Excel®, PowerPoint and Publisher files, as well as Adobe PDF files and
much more. I took a USB thumb/flash drive to my store and was able to plug it into their computer and bring it up and explain what I wanted. Check with your local UPS Store but most stores actually offer the ability to upload your documents online! Visit www.theupsstore.com

Ordering materials was actually pretty easy. Easier than I thought they would be! I have been so busy, I haven't really had a chance to put a "layout" together for my cards. So I went to the UPS Store with just my logo. The person who helped me was great, she helped me put one together, put the layout together, font etc. I uploaded my header and had it done in about 5 minutes! For my media kit, she went over numerous options on what type of paper, color/no color, binding etc. I ended up going with fancy glossy paper which was 10 cents more but worth it in my opinion! The media kits were printed right there in less than a minute!

When I ordered my business cards, I chose the non glossy because I wanted people to be able to write on them but the paper was still very good quality. When I placed my order, she said it may take up to 2 days but I got a call the very next morning!

So what did I put on my business cards?
Logo
Site
Tag Line
Site
About.me link
Twitter Handle

I sat at the computer going over this about 10 times making sure everything looked correct. Spelling, layout and of course links!

I will be attaching cute money related candies to help make them stand out.

I also ordered 5 media kits, which contain 4 pages.

First page: Logo
Second Page: Information about me and my blog
Fourth Page: Blog Features and conferences I have attended
Third Page: Rate info

I really liked the professionalism and quality of my items ordered from the UPS Store. I am so glad they helped make this experience less stressful for me as Blogher is only a week away!

#Print4Blogher Session 5 ~ Design

This past week we talked about Design in our #print4blogher session with Debba from Girlfriendology.com and The Ups Store! We talked about designing handout materials for Blogher and things to consider when creating them. With easily over 3000 people being present, it’s important to be able to show your “brand” on something you can leave with others.

Review Goals/Connections – First you have to start with who do you want/plan to meet with?
Considering who you have established you want to meet at Blogher, how could you cater your marketing materials to them? What do you want to hand out? Do you want to create 1 business card for brands and 1 for bloggers? Do you want to create a media kit catered to everyone you want to work with or do you want to do individual ones for the people you would like to work with?

What makes you a win-win partner?

We know that we are there to promote our blog/brand/business, but what’s in it for the people you want to work with ? Remember that everyone there has goals for BlogHer too – what might they be? How can you help them reach their goals – that would also help you reach yours? It’s about a mutually beneficial arrangement and it’s about the beginning of a great
partnership for both of you!

When starting to create your marketing materials, start at branding. Your materials whatever they may be need to be a representation of what your brand is. Whatever you create, you need a tagline. It’s is a great way to explain who you are and it allows you to position your brand. It’s best if it’s short and to the point – but shows some personality. Your tagline is what is going to tell others exactly what your brand is, and why they should check out your blog. Can’t come up with a simple phrase to describe you? Look at other similar sites and business cards (no, don’t ‘steal’ their taglines but they may lend some inspiration).

Materials – what will best promote you and your goals?

Business Cards – Basically, you just gotta have business cards! Design them to include your contact information, business/blog name (logo), tag line and social media names/URLs such as Twitter, FB, Klout, Google + but Make sure it’s not too crowded with
info and if you have a longer url that goes to a specific page on your site such as your PR/Media page, use Bit.ly or a URL shortening service to avoid L-O-N-G, they’re-never-
going-to-visit-them-because-its-too-much-to-type URLs.

Consider doing an About.me URL that links everything you are involved in at one site.

One thing I am doing is creating a QR code that is going to link to my About.me page. This way they can scan my code and they can click on each of my links right there to follow my Twitter, FB, feed, Klout etc. I’m all about combing ease with technology! If you need to make a QR code, it’s extremely easy just do a google search for create QR code. You can see my About.me page here: http://about.me/supersara

Another thing that people do put on their business cards is printing your address on them. One of the concerns is obviously safety, if you do put an address on there consider doing a PO Box. The UPS Store actually offers P.O. boxes that are actually listed as a street address. If you do put your address on them, consider making a separate business card for brands and one for networking with bloggers. Bloggers had expressed negative thoughts when other bloggers put addresses on their cards because it may show that you are looking for *free stuff*.

Get creative with your business cards (within the look/feel of your brand) – you want to stand out and be remembered, right?! Debba talks about another business she had, the tagline was “Creative Ideas to Grow your Business.” She had a small paper punch from a craft store that was a leaf and had punched a leaf/hole in each printed business card. This is interesting because I actually had tried to find a "money" symbol stamp and do this before with my business cards!

A few other things to consider to help your business cards stand out:

* Print in a portrait (vertical) format instead of a horizontal format.
* Consider front and back printing. Some people like to just put their logo on the front and their info on the back. Some like to leave the back empty so people may write info on them.
* Put your photo on the card if you’d like people to identify you easily and it helps those you connect with remember who you are when they look at your business card later. If you don’t want to include a photo of yourself, what about a creative photo that represents your blog?
* Attach something to your business card that is creative and identifies your brand in a creative way. I am attaching money related candies to my business cards.
* Do you have a sponsor? Figure out how you can creative incorporate them on your business card. Last year I saw a blogger that had put a question on her business card and instructed people to tweet the answer to her including the brand’s twitter name to enter a giveaway. It was a great way to bring brand awareness to her sponsor and it was fun for people to enter.

Media Kit – For those potential partners who need more information on you, there’s the faithful MediaKit (or ‘Press Kit’). It can hold a wealth of info on you and your blog. You have to decide what is right for your audience (this goes back to considering who you want to work with) and what information you should provide to determine if a partnership with you would be beneficial.

What you should include:

* Your name, blog name, blog address, tag line and your elevator pitch. This is the short paragraph that sums up what your “brand is.
* Contact info, how can people contact you (email, phone etc). Consider putting your address in your media kit instead of business cards.
* Social Media Links: Twitter, Facebook, Google + etc.
* Whom you’ve worked with (client logos are always a colorful and possibly impressive way of expressing this)
* Page Rank, Klout score, Technorati and/or Alexa ranking and traffic including your reader demographic, unique visitors and page views, number of feed subscribers, search engine rankings such as, Google etc. You don’t have to include ALL of these stats – that might be too much. Just cover the main ones that show your audience – and that you feel comfortable sharing.

More items to include in your Media Kit:
Press Releases – If you have any ‘official’ announcements (like you celebrated your blog’s fifth birthday or you partners with a non-profit to raise funds), it’s great to do press releases and send them to the media. If you have some/any, feel free to include them in your media kit. They look very ‘official’ and impressive.

Goals/Rate sheet: What are your goals for the next year, tell them how they can work with you – Include advertising rates, sizes and guidelines. Include if you do giveaways or promotions, or you’re interested in writing for their blog/website, offer your services. (You may or may not want
to provide the costs for doing so – depending on how you want to position yourself)

Samples, etc. – Print out what your blog looks like or share your most popular post(s). Have some great LinkedIn recommendations, comments from companies you’ve worked with previously or some tweets with kind comments others have shared? Include these. Include everything that you think will be helpful for them to identify you as a credible, professional, wonderful potential blogger-partner. Sell yourself in your Media kit!

Folder – Like with your business card, you want to be professional and promote your brand. Right? Well, a stack of papers in a paperclip isn’t the professional image that you’d display with a nice folder. (I recommend this over small binders – no one wants to carry that much weight/info home with them.) The UPS Store can help you with these. They can help you create a full-color folder for your media kit.

Design – Typically it is best to stick with a clean, easily-readable font and to limit your design to only two fonts. Go for whatever is easy to read and clean – just stick with that font on all of your materials. It is also probably a good idea if you have a certain font you like to use on your blog, be consistent with your marketing materials by having the same font.

Graphics – Consider placing a photo of you (if you’d like), a screen-shot of your homepage – graphics give it color and interest. Show a chart of how your blog traffic has grown. Feature quotes or tweets that compliment your blog or how you work with companies. Make it appealing and representative of your brand.

What I have done for my media kit is my front page is everything about me including my info and stats. I also include my goals for the next year on my blog along with stating the ideal brands I would like to work with, the second page is everyone I have worked with including their brand images and a 1 sentence line about the campaign you participated in. Starting with the larger brands/campaigns on top down to the smaller campaigns.

Note: while this is called a ‘Media Kit,’ it’s not just for the media. It is a comprehensive overview of your information which is helpful for media, agencies and companies to know all about you and your blog.

Again, get creative! You you could do a flyer size that is two sided and folded twice – or cut twice for a third of a sheet. You could make it into a mini media kit by keeping all the copy on one half of a sheet and making it into a little book. Have your media kit collated and bound. Have fun with it! That will make it even more memorable for the lucky recipients.

Next week we are talking all about printing! The ambassadors will be going into the UPS Store next week to have items printed so this week I went to TheUpsStore.com and checked out everything they have to offer as far as printing goes.
They offer:

* High quality color and black and white digital printing and copying
* Marketing materials
* Brochures, business cards, flyers and more
* Large Format printing and banners, this is something to consider if you have a sponsor.

I also found out you can easily upload your documents to your UPS store right from your computer. You can find out more about what the UPS Store can do for you at http://www.theupsstore.com/print/index.html

#Print4Blogher Session 4 ~ Making Connections and Securing Sponsorships

Come Talk to Me at BlogHer '11!

Blogher is almost here, every day I get more and more excited!! This past week in our #Print4Blogher series we went over making connections and sponsorships. As you probably already know, Blogher can easily cost up to $1000 if not more, especially if you are coming from across country. Sponsorships are not only a great way to help with costs, by partnering with a company this can easily grow your blog readership with their help.

While I have not saught out any sponsorships this year, I did last year. I looked at who would be a good fit for my blog. Since I write about deals, I wanted to work with someone who was a good fit and offered a good deal! I was excited to work with Groupon because obviously they are #1 in daily deals. So who could you work with that would be a great partner for a sponsor?

Here is what we went over with the help of Debba from Girlfriendology.com!
  • Reviewing Goals – What do you want to accomplish?
Over the past few weeks we have been talking about what our goals are for Blogher. I think it can be overwhelming, especially if you have no idea what to expect. I think when making goals, the best thing to do is talk with others who have been. Ask them what to expect, what they have experienced and what they feel may be the highlights of the conference.

I know that I want to work with people relevant to my blog. A few of the sponsors I am looking forward to interacting with: Retailmenot.com, Eversave.com and Redplum!
  • Reviewing Research Findings – Who to work with?
If you have been following us, you know that last week we talked about research. We discussed how to find out who will be at Blogher. You can find the Blogher sponsor list here: http://www.blogher.com/node/305898/attendees?sort_by=name

  • Making initial Contacts – Pre-BlogHer connections

Who are you looking forward to meeting at Blogher? Is there a sponsor that you can't wait to get in contact with to create a partnership in the future? Is there someone you want to work with now who will be there? There is no reason you can't reach out to a sponsor of Blogher and ask them if they are interested in working together now and possibly form a sponsorship opportunity before Blogher. In fact, this may be a great start when finding a sponsor. They are already invested in attending to have a presence, they could easily amplify that presence having you as a sponsor.

When making the initial contact, consider tweeting at them and telling them you are excited to see them. Do the research and find out who their media contact is and see if you can speak with them.

If you are looking for a sponsorship from another company not attending Blogher, start with your strongest connections. Who have you worked with in the past by either offering a giveaway or doing a blog post for? How would they benefit freom being represented at Blogher by you?
  • Getting Sponsorships – Who, what, how?
Before reaching out to a company about a sponsorship, make sure you understand the Blogher policy on sponsorships. BlogHer Conference Sponsorship Guidelines:

Therefore, in a change from last year’s guidelines, no sponsor swag, gifts or literature may be distributed within
the conference space or the host hotel, directly or indirectly. Such materials will be removed if left lying on any surface within the conference space or hotel. Any bloggers seen indiscriminately distributing materials to attendees will be given a personal warning.

Any second incident, whether of leaving materials on a surface within the conference space or of indiscriminately distributing materials to attendees may result in the attendee’s badge being confiscated and attendance revoked for the rest of the conference.

Networking is a big part of BlogHer events. Of course, many attendees use the traditional business card to exchange information. Some attendees are more creative, offering buttons, bumper stickers, and other similar vehicles for their blog URLs and/or Twitter handles. You may include your sponsor information on such materials.

To be clear: You may include sponsor information on your contact materials that you would exchange in the normal course of networking. You may not pass out sponsor materials.

So what does this mean for you and your sponsor? You can be sponsored andobviously the agreement between your sponsor and you will have to abide by these guidelines. Some ideas on what you can do for your sponsor and abide by the rules:
  • Place your sponsor on your business card, consider doing the back and saying something like this:
Please check out my sponsor for a great deal on XYZ at www.XYZ.com
  • Wear a T Shirt with your sponsors information
  • Do a Blog post before/after
  • Tweet about your sponsor with something like this:
"Thank you to my sponsor XYZ shoe company for sponsoring me, I am so happy to be in comfy shoes at Blogher11!
    • Debba says get creative! Make stickers to put on your laptop, bags etc. Make buttons and other things related to your sponsor. Stand out! Make a tierra and sash with the sponsor info or bedazzle their name on your badge.

Last year I took my sponsors t-shirt, dressed it up with ribbon on the sleeves and put on a cute belt on top of it with a skirt. I also made "flair" and while it wasn't actually relative to my sponsor it was geared towards my blog and I got so many compliments. Make it fun, so if your sponsored by a shoe company, tie their tag line in and say something like
"ask me why I look so relaxed"
It's a great ice breaker too!

So what if your sponsor gives you "swag" to hand out. Consider partnering with an "unofficial" Blogher party and ask if you could put your "swag" inside their goodie bags.

I am not sure how this will work so don't quote me on this but maybe tweet out that you have XYZ and if someone wants it, they can DM you or find you.

Is it too late to secure a sponsorship? Absolutely not! I secured sponsorship the day before I left for NYC last year to go to Blogher. I asked them to overnight anything to the hotel. So don't feel discouraged if you get many "no's" before you get some yes's in there!

Want some help in what to include in a Blogher Sponsor letter? My friend Becca at OurCrazyBoys.com shared this template with me:

  • {Greeting}

    {Prior knowledge/experience of the product}

    {Information about the conference}

    {Explanation of your blog, what you want, what you are offering}

    {Question at the end, offer to send media kit and offer that you are willing to talk about the opportunity and cater to what they are looking for}

    {Closing}

Debba says make sure in your initial contact and your communication throughout, always be professional and proofed! Make sure your emails look clean and do not have any misspellings. Complimenting their brand and of course having a good understanding of what they are about are essential when connecting about a potential sponsorship.

What else can you do? Debba says Offer to provide a complete report on BlogHer11. Customize it to their specific interests/needs. Ask them what information would be most valuable to them, then gather and report that information. (For example: If they’d like to work with lots of bloggers, offer to assist and share their information with bloggers and, if the bloggers are aware/agree to it, share their information with your sponsor.
Perhaps you can even assist them in their future blogger relations.)
  • Another Contact – A Vital Partner in your Success

    Debba shared this with us:

Stop by your local UPS Store and introduce yourself to them this week. Tell them that you’re a blogger who is going to a BIG blogger conference and ask for their ideas as to how they can support your success. I’m sure they’ll have lots of ideas on professional printing, shipping and servicing your blog / business. I love to get their ideas and to hear what

other businesses have done to prepare for a tradeshow or conference. Check out their services and we’ll get into materials for BlogHer next week.

Have you been keeping up with what we are doing? Find our past sessions and more about what the UPS Store can do for you at www.lovinlogistics.com
This week we are talking about design, what to put in our media kit and business cards!

#Print4Blogher Session 3 ~ Research

Come Talk to Me at BlogHer '11!

Can you believe, only 1 month till Blogher?! I am loving our prep sessions with the #Print4Blogher team! This past week for our #Print4Blogher session, we talked about reviewing our goals to uncover what research we need to be doing for Blogher.

Here is more about what we've covered!

Who we need to find / know more about at Blogher:

Who are you looking to meet at Blogher? This week I checked out the Blogher sponsor list to see which brands I wanted to interact with. I am excited so many great brands will be there! One of my main goals is of course going for fun so the Smores area with Hershey's sounds great but of course I also want to find brands that fit with my brand like Redplum and Retail Me Not! You can see the Blogher Sponsor list here:
http://www.blogher.com/node/305898/sponsors?from=subnav

I'm honestly excited about meeting everyone I can at Blogher but it's nice to meet like minded niche bloggers, especially if they are an inspiration. If you are looking for what bloggers are attending, you can find the list here: http://www.blogher.com/node/305898/attendees?sort_by=name

Where and how we can find out more on the right connections / information:
First stop for everything Blogher is obviously Blogher.com. Also, searching on Google which includes setting up a Google Alert for Blogher. Keeping up on Twitter is another big thing and we talked about not being afraid to interact with brands right on Twitter. Also, visiting their websites are important to find out more about the brand.

Another thing we talked about almost being a necessity is having a LinkedIn account. Debba states in the prep session that she hears from brand representatives that they want to work with bloggers who have a professional appearance, and verifying that with a LinkedIn account is important. I am almost embarrassed to say I do not have one! I am setting one up this week though!

What Debba from Girlfriendology says to:
  • Review your Goals / Strategy – define what research you need to do (people, companies)
  • Do the Research – what sponsors, speakers, bloggers, media do you want to meet?
  • BONUS: Make sure your LinkedIn profile is what you’d like a brand/company to see, reach out
  • to others for recommendations

My plan of action:
  • I set up a Tweetdeck stream for Blogher, it's an easy way to stay up to date with what is happening.
  • Continue to seek out what brands will be there that I want to interact with.
  • Create a twitter list of the people I want to keep up with at Blogher.
  • Set up a LinkedIn profile.
  • Find out more about the speakers to help me decide which sessions I would like to attend.
  • Keeping up with the parties and special events.
This week we are talking about making connections, I am really excited about this! You can find out more about our sessions and keep up with the prep sessions at www.lovinlogistics.com

#Print4Blogher Session 2 ~ Setting Goals

Come Talk to Me at BlogHer '11!

In this week's Print4Blogher session, we talked all about setting goals for Blogher11. Shelby at http://www.feltstories.com/ did a great job at leading this session. We went over how to define goals, ways to execute them and we shared what our goals are for Blogher this year. Debba at Girlfriendology.com suggests thinking about the following when setting your goals for Blogher11 while keeping your brand in mind:

  • What would make going to BlogHer a BIG success for you?
  • Who would you meet?
  • What would you learn?
  • What things would change about your blog/business after attending BlogHer?
I think the most important thing about goals is writing them down. This ensures that I don't forget and it allows me to start the brainstorming session on paper. I have a book that I try to take with me everywhere (car, purse, wherever my computer is etc). On the call, someone had stated when you write them down, you are releasing it into the universe.

I remember after I returned from Blogher last year, I don't feel like I accomplished much. I had fun, and that was one of my goals but I don't think I had any goals before going, which is why I felt this way when I returned.

This year, I want to make out my goals using the ABC Strategy. Listing down everything that I would want to accomplish during Blogher this year. Prioritizing the ones that are most important to me with A's, second most important with B's and the ones that I would like to do but are more of a back burner priority with a C.

As far as preparing for Blogher, this is a separate goal list and the other goal list will be that at Blogher list.

Here are some things I need to accomplish before Blogher:
  • Go through the speaker sessions and highlight which ones I want to attend. Blogher has usually at least 5 sessions going on at a time, so I need to make sure I know which ones I want to make sure I am there to listen. Also, I have heard this is typical for Blogher and it was true last year, you should get to that session you want to attend early because if it's a popular session you may find yourself sitting in the back on the floor. I did this at 2 sessions last year.
  • Order business cards and other print material. Last year I had 2 different business cards, one was for the brands I interacted with and one was for my blogging network. We're actually going to go over this in an upcoming #Print4Blogher session

What I want to accomplish at Blogher
  • Attend favored sessions.
  • Meet with other bloggers. Not only to network but there is something to say about being in a room of thousands that actually can relate to what you do. The energy and motivation I took away from last year was awesome, I plan to come home with that same feeling! I definitely want to come home with new friends, well not literally.
  • Connect with brands that fit my brand. Last year, I tried to talk to every brand that was there and I came home wondering why the heck I had some of these brands business cards because they didn't relate to me at all. I am going to stick with only talking with those I really want to connect with. This will also help me from feeling overwhelmed.
  • Have my go-to girls. Ladies, if you take away anything from this post of preparing for Blogher, know that I highly suggest you have a group of other bloggers you can go to when feeling overwhelmed. Get phone numbers if you can (text, call etc) to some of your blogging friends. If you want mine, I am happy to share it (not on my blog of course). I just remember walking into Blogher and feeling like a small fish tiny tadpole. I mean I only knew about 5 bloggers personally who were there out of over 1000 people. I was glad to know I had a few phone numbers and I could text my go-to gals when I was feeling overwhelmed.
  • I want to learn about time management. I think one of the biggest things I have struggled with is getting everything I want done on my blog. I wonder, how do others do it, so I hope to learn something about this while there.
  • Have fun! While Blogher is overwhelming, my ultimate goal is to have fun. Have a few laughs, learn, network and treat this as a mini vacation :-)
What are some of your goals for Blogher11?

#Print4Blogher Session 1 ~ Branding

Come Talk to Me at BlogHer '11!

I don't think I have formally announced it here but I am going to go to Blogher 11 in San Diego in August (insert happy dance here) !! I went to Blogher last year and while i loved it, it was pretty overwhelming. I had done some research on my own and tried to find forums to help me prepare. This year I am excited to be preparing with the #Print4Blogher Sessions with Debba from Girlfriendology.com, the UPS store and a few other awesome bloggers:

This past Friday, we did our first session: Branding ~ What is your brand?
http://lovinlogistics.com/2011/06/print4blogher-prep-session-1/

Your brand is the consistent message, impression, personality that companies, bloggers and readers think of when they consider your blog.
Are you helpful, informative, resourceful, funny, friendly or in-your-face? What do your readers/fans/ followers expect to hear from you? Are you consistent with your tone, topics and timing?

Your brand is YOU, what do YOU represent? Content, style, niche, design, tone, formatting are all things to consider when defining your brand. If you were going to read your own blog as a “new reader” are you seeing your brand?

When working on defining my brand, I sat down and considered what it was I wanted to accomplish when I first started my blog, what I am wanting to accomplish now and what I want to accomplish in the future. I have actually changed my “brand” since I first began blogging. I am sure most everyone here is familiar with what blog niche they fit into. I am in the “deal blogging” niche, I am amongst a group of thousands of other bloggers who blog about deals. Since from the beginning of my blog to now, I have tried to break the “mold” on what is defined by my niche of bloggers. For me personally as an example, I started out doing coupon matchups and posting every deal I could find. I actually changed that and took out matching coupons with sales but would still post deals and gave referrals on where they could find the information if they were looking for it. I also started posting original content such as recipes, I wanted to create more original content to be viewed as a more authentic blogger. I felt this was a necessity to stay true to my brand which is sharing my frugalness with others and it also helps in obtain a higher readership because a lot of other bloggers already do blog about being frugal, I think it also looks good to brands that I will want to work with. When you share something “original” (which is your brand) it helps people come back to your blog! One thing that Debba had stated and I always try to do is to be authentic and if I do work with a brand, it has to be true to MY brand. So if I do partner up for advertising or a post, it has to be related.

I think an important thing to also consider when creating your “brand” is coming up with a “tagline” for your blog. What is your purpose clearly defined for your blog that your readers can see first thing when they stop by your blog. As far as working with brands, one of my ultimate goals would be to partner up with a larger brand, label etc and be featured on their website.

What do you consistently communicate?
I think this goes back to looking at other’s in your “niche” and defining what you want to blog about and what you don’t. How do you stand out? Also when defining your brand with consistency, make sure your design of your blog and anything attached to your “brand” matches you blog posts. This includes colors, font, logo’s, business cards etc.

For my blog, I know I want to share my ways of being frugal and that includes coupons, freebies, recipes, crafts and DIY projects but no overwhelming my readers with so many posts they can’t keep up.

What is your tone:

For me, I like to be casual and share my “brand” from the view of a mom but also do it with a professional flare. I want others to be able to read my posts and relate to what I have to say. I think this goes with always being true to my audience and writing authentically and personally. I do try to write consistently as far as the content I include in my blog posts. However The point about writing consistently was interesting because it’s not only about the content you provide, it’s about the formatting of your brand. It made me wonder if if I have been writing as consistently as I should as far as formats. Example; In my DIY posts I always try to include photos and details but my format isn’t always the same. I think that is something I will work on, especially in my tutorials for the craft projects and recipes.

Next week we are talking about Strategy and Goals, I can't wait to see how this lesson goes!
