St Patricks Day Slime (frugal craft)

Do you remember playing with slime as a kid? I would buy this stuff out of the quarter vending machines and I am sure it drove my mom crazy. With the kids being on Spring Break we decided to make some Slime for the kids to play with. It was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be.

Ingredients:
1 tsp Borax
1 cup water
1/2 cup water (these need to be separate)
1 - 4 ounce Elmer's White School Glue (or half cup)
2 bowls
Food Coloring if desired Directions:

1. Pour the glue into one bowl.
2. Add 1/2 cup of water to the glue bowl and stir well.
   
3. If desired, add food coloring. Add about 1 tsp of food coloring to glue bowl.
   
4. In a separate bowl, mix one cup of water and 1 teaspoon of borax powder.
5. Slowly stir the Borax mixture into the glue mixture.
6. Stir and kneed the slime until firm.
   
7. Break apart the slime if you need to divide between kids and store in zip lock bags.
8. This is a personal preference but this is an outside only toy in our house because it will get all over.
   

We made green for St. Patrick's Day! This craft only took about 5 minutes to make and cost less than $.30!

St. Patricks Scavenger Hunt Craft/Game

We love to do crafts with items our of our recycle bin. One thing we enjoy doing with recycled items is painting cardboard (cereal boxes, shipping boxes etc).

For St. Patrick's Day, we created a Shamrock Scavenger Hunt game.
The idea for the game is to have multiple Shamrocks as clues, the first clue leading to the second etc. All the clues lead up to the "Treasure". It's similar to painting and hiding Easter Eggs!



For this craft we will need:
Cardboard Box
Green Paint w/ brushes
X-ACTO Knife Shamrock Cookie Cutter Treasure



First, we took a cardboard box and painted the inside green. The box was a little larger than a shoe box and had minimal mess because we painted the inside.

After the inside was painted, we traced the shamrock cookie cutter into shapes on the box.

I carefully cut out the shamrocks with an X-ACTO knife. The knife was easy to use and if it dulls, I found refills at Walmart, 5 for only $2!

After the cutting was completed, I wrote secret clues on the back leading the kids to the next place where a shamrock was hidden.

For the treasure I used spare change. After the game is complete, the kids can paint and dazzle the shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day.

Park + Dollar Store = Frugal Afternoon!

Last week the kids and I did a $5 park playdate. While the park is free, we went to our local dollar store to take advantage of some outdoor items for Spring.

We bought 2 kites, 2 large bubble wands and liquid bubbles. Although, there was a large selection of outdoor items for sale!




I did some research and found a good "bubbles" recipe if you and your kids want to try and make it at home. The making of the bubbles could be a great adventure in itself!

Liquid Bubbles Recipe:

2 1/2 quarts water
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1 cup liquid dish detergent
Food coloring (optional)

Because we're working with bubbles here or the creation of, this has to be done slowly and carefully or your kitchen could be consumed with a soapy mess. If weather permits, take this adventure outside. Store in old bubble containers or plastic containers. Add food coloring for colored bubbles just make sure these bubbles are blown outside to avoid any stains.

For the bubble wands there are lots of things you can use in your house such as whisks, cookie cutters, slotted spoons, potato mashers and more! Have the kids get creative with what they think would work as a bubble wand!

When going to the park, make an afternoon of it by bringing the bikes and a picnic lunch!

The Frugal Spring Breaker

This week we've got all 4 kids home on Spring Break. I'm excited be because usually our weekends are filled with chaos so it will be nice getting to plan a few things. We're on a tight budget so we are coming up with some creative things to do that I am happy to share will all of you!
